My Valentine’s Day

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

A good friend of mine and I went to the Centre for Dreams on the 14th for their Valentine’s dance and quite honestly, I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else. Last time I baked cupcakes and went with my friend Louis the week of Christmas, he was a gentleman and carried the boxes from my car inside. All the members thought he was so cool because he “made” (ahem) the cupcakes and because he also came back from Afghanistan not too long ago. A real-life, Canadian hero… who apparently has a knack for baking too! :) I was fine with him taking credit for the cupcakes before the members started making Christmas cards for him, thanking him for “all that he had done for our country” and the “delicious treats”. I wanted a Christmas card too!

So last week just when we got to the centre, I told my friend about The Louis Story and how everyone thought he made the cupcakes because he brought it in to which he responded “Let me carry it in!” Sigh. Boys will be boys! :)

I got to hang out with the members for a bit and two of the guys came over, gave me a hug, kissed my hand and wished me a Happy Valentine’s Day. It was so sweet! I just love, love spending time with them. It truly warms my heart :) Everyone wore RED that day so I wore it as well to fit in. I had a quick photo shoot in the morning with a few of my latest creations – one of them being my newest favourite cake (pictured in previous post). I always wanted to do an OMBRE cake and I’m glad I finally got a chance to do so! Can you tell I love pinks/reds?

Valentine’s to me is just another day. I make it a habit to show my loved ones every day how much I love them and how much I care. I just love little gestures because they’re so full of thought! Some days when I know my brother will have a long day at work, I would buy his favourite chocolate/snacks and leave it on the dashboard in his car along with a little note. And every night before I sleep, I prep all of my parents’ vitamins for the next day. These will be the things I’ll miss the most when I move out! :) I don’t need “just ONE DAY” to show my loved ones what they mean to me and quite honestly, splurging on Valentine’s gifts is overrated. Chocolate will make you fat and flowers die… um… happy love day, honey? :) (I sound so cynical! Ha ha… ). On the 14th after our visit to DREAMS, my friend and I went to Costco where he bought ingredients to prepare for his romantic dinner with his girlfriend. We had HOT DOGS and coke (for him, diet for me) at the food court AND he bought my mom a whole rotisserie chicken. His exact words were, “Tell her I said Happy Valentine’s Day!” to which I responded, “What happened to flowers and chocolate?! This is so un-romantic!” him: “Flowers and chocolate are so overrated! This chicken is PRACTICAL and it can feed your whole family tonight”… he’s so eloquent with words. You know this gift was probably one of the best gifts ever. Don’t get me wrong–I’ve been given tons of lavish gifts in the past but there’s only so much jewelry, fancy dinners, flowers and plush toys a girl can accept before it gets old! Clearly, I find joy in the small things :D

And you know, nothing quite says “Happy Valentine’s, homegirl!” like air-chilled, grass-fed, 100% certified organic poultry! :D

Happy Love Day!

I’m a Friend of the Scarecrow

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

This post is a month late but it’s too cute not to post! Remember back in December when I got to attend Bravo TV’s finale taping of WAY OFF BROADWAY – The Wizard of Oz Musical? The director, Sarina Condello, ordered these lovebear cupcakes for Valentine’s Day.

Here’s my story of how Sarina and I connected.

I always wanted to make cupcakes for the cast and crew of a musical production. Don’t ask why. It’s one of those random things I always wanted to do. After I saw WICKED last year, I made a witch’s hat and a broomstick cupcake and thought, wouldn’t it be cool if the cast and crew got these cupcakes after one of their performances? I even specially ordered black cupcake liners with green polka dots on it for the photos. I used 6 out of 100 and the 94 are packed away in a clear box in my basement marked, ”What was I thinking?” If you’re ever in need if 94 black cupcake liners with green polka dots on it, you have my e-mail! ;)

When I found out my friend Jon was in this 8-week series that follow amateur theatre performers pursuing their dream of performing on Broadway, I KNEW I had to get in contact with the director somehow. I was ecstatic when I found out they would be doing WIZARD OF OZ of all musicals! This was my chance. Even if I had to VOLUNTEER to make these cupcakes, I would do it. I wanted to be a part of it SO badly.

Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t desperate or anything. I didn’t see it as my chance to be “discovered” and suddenly I’d be Bravo’s official cupcake-maker. I just simply wanted to be a part of it. As an entrepreneur, as a self-employed business owner, if you don’t constantly push yourself to improve—no one will. Setting these small goals encouraged me to push myself to talk to people I wouldn’t normally talk to, to do something differently and to get different results. So what if the director didn’t respond to me? At least I tried.

I e-mailed Sarina, introduced myself and literally said, “Hi I’m Jenn and I’m a friend of Jon’s (you know, the scarecrow)”. YES, that is exactly what I said. Never in a million years did I ever think I’d start an e-mail stating that I was a friend of a scarecrow. But that’s “so me” :D Luckily, she responded and wanted me to make cupcakes for their finale party. I was so excited that she was taking a chance on me. I wasn’t expecting much—I didn’t want to set my hopes too high just in case the answer was, “no”.

I wanted to train myself to seek out opportunities and make things happen for myself instead of “waiting to be discovered”. So many of us wait for the perfect opportunity to come knocking at our doors but life doesn’t work like that. The happiest people are the ones who go out to find those opportunities and make something of their lives. If they don’t, they will spend their whole lives waiting and sadly, they will never get that time back.

WAY OFF BROADWAY premiered three weeks ago and I’m so addicted to it. In an interview when Sarina was looking for her performers, she said, “My show is going to have a lot of HEART” and that line stuck out to me. I try to live every day of my life with a lot of HEART whether I am sculpting fondant bears or e-mailing clients back on cake designs. I believe that if you have HEART, it will show through everything you do.

Three years ago when I was still living downtown, my friend and I were chatting on MSN and I asked him what was ONE quality his future wife had to have. Without hesitation he said, “She has to have a BIG heart”. Ever since then, I’ve been looking for this “heart” in others as well. I get so excited when I meet people with this “HEART” because I think, “Wow! This is what TRUE HEART looks like!” There is something so different about this show. It’s not just an 8-week production, it’s a journey. The way Sarina interacts with these performers really shows that she cares for them. She is passionate about helping others discover their inner performer and she will go the extra mile to do whatever it takes to help that person.

Here’s a link to watch all the episodes of WAY OFF BROADWAY on Bravo. Enjoy! :D xoxo

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

It’s Valentine’s Day and I finally get a day off. I’m ecstatic. I’m also really nerdy like that :) I did 5 cakes this weekend… FIVE! They were all very detail-oriented and everything turned out better than I expected. After 1 hour of combat tonight, 2km run and a little bit of weight training… this girl is TI-RED! In the meantime, enjoy this cutesy owl cake from this weekend. I always wanted to do an owl cake and now I can cross it off my list! I’d be scared to encounter an owl in real life though… hoO! :D

Valentine’s Day LoveBears!

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Hello lovelies! I’m back from my business trip in Miami and it was mucho fun! :) If you call 14-hour days sitting in multiple seminars, networking and listening to speaker after speaker FUN. Yes, I had fun :) I learned a lot about how to grow my business by streamlining it, utilizing social media (which has been titled “the next big thing”) and increasing sales by building relationships. I met a TON of people… my FB friends list exploded and I love it! I had a blast.

Happy Pink Hearts Day!

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

To me, Valentine’s day is just another day.
On this “just another day”, the BF got me a dozen “rose” chocolate-covered strawberries (my all-time favourite indulgence!) and an airbrushing machine/compressor for my fondant cakes! That’s right! Future cakes from Sweet Escapes will have an airbrushing option! :)

Like my new hot pink box?

I thought it’d be very fitting for this “just another day” but do I really need an excuse to make red/pink cupcakes with hearts and sparkles and package them in hot pink boxes? ;)

A dozen little bundles of perfection!

This was for a pick-up order tonight from the official photographer of last week’s A Sweets Affair event. The cupcakes were for his girlfriend and he got it customized to say, “I love you, Jenn”. These, however, were not delivered to my door from a fake boyfriend that nobody has ever met before… I wasn’t tootin’ my own horn, I swear!

Hee hee… “tootin’”… what a funny word.

A Sweets Affair Sneak Peek

Monday, February 14th, 2011

I will be getting the complete set of photos from this past Friday’s A Sweets Affair tomorrow but in the meantime, check out my CUPCAKE table. That’s my friend, Kin. We met at cake school :)

She is an accountant so she was probably balancing my books in this picture and by “books”, I mean my clipboard with paper scraps and by “balancing”, I mean making sure I added a little “|” to the cupcakes we sold. I am not an accountant for a reason! :)

Strawberries & Sweet Champagne

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

A friend of mine bought a bunch of alcohol for me to experiment with in my baking. She specifically asked for strawberries and Champagne in any shape or form. So I came up with this! Champagne and strawberry sparkling wine cupcakes with strawberry liqueur buttercream. I’m not a big cupcake person and I don’t drink AT ALL but I instantly fell in love with these guys.

Enjoy these Champagne and Strawberries Sparkler Cupcakes!
