Let’s Party! :)

Sunday, January 27th, 2013

While people look forward to Fridays and say, “TGIF!” with great enthusiasm, bakers are groaning because Fridays are equivalent to others’ Mondays! :) I haven’t fully immersed myself in work yet (baby steps!) and have been snuggled up from the cold weather, watching movies all week and found this snapshot in my photos tonight and wanted to share it with you.

Yep, these are my peeps!

BACK from VACATION!

Monday, January 21st, 2013

Hi everyone! I’m finally snapping out of holiday mode. While most people had to go back to work in early January, I took 6 glorious weeks off, went to a bunch of fun places and now I’m back, for good. Or, for now ;) I just got back from LA yesterday afternoon and am adjusting from the 25C weather to… whatever you want to call what we’re experiencing. Ha ha… :P

Here’s a quick snapshot of what’s been going on!

We took the boys to LEGOLAND and it was so fun! Everything was made out of Lego and let’s just say, THEY were the boss that day! Who taught Zachary how to read a map?! He would point to a direction and say, “let’s go there!” and we’d follow him like his little slaves. It was fun though! :)

This was at Tim and Joanna’s wedding with my bestest Bear! Look! We both match — purple!! :)

Me at Dolcissimo at the Shops at Chino Hills. It was a cutesy little bakery and there I was, doing “competitor research” :P

One of the best Korean BBQ places I’ve ever been too — at Rowland Heights. Here with the cousins! I smelled like meat for days :P We ordered one of every item on the menu — and when it time for VEAL CHITTERLINGS, I almost lost it. You can google it. It was… tubey :S

Mom’s SURPRISE birthday lunch at the Olive Garden. A good family friend owns a ginormous bakery in LA and gave us a box of petit fours. They were absolutely DELICIOUS and talking to him has given me a lot of insight for my business. Can’t wait to work on those ideas!

In other news: look who got a feature in Ryerson’s Alumni magazine?! Even though they called my company ‘Cake Designs’, at least they got the website right… which is all that matters! ;) I’ve been so blessed this past year and this was definitely the cherry on top! 2013 will be an amazing one.

And after MUCH reflection on everything that happened in 2012, my greatest achievement was losing 17.9% body fat in just a year. My clothes don’t fit anymore but I’m too cheap to go on a shopping spree so I’m just going to make do with what I have, for now! Ha ha.. spoken like a true Asian girl! ;) 2012 has been the best year of my life not only for my business but for personal achievements as well. If you want to know how I did it, don’t be shy and send me an e-mail! I would love to help other people be successful as well!! :)

I don’t even recognize the “before” girl anymore. WHO IS SHE?!?!

Exciting News!

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012

Hi Everyone!
I’m super excited to be chosen as one of the finalists for Purolator’s Small Business Challenge for a chance to win a $10,000 business grant. We had to write an inspirational story of how our company came to be and how it actively seeks to inspire other business owners. At first, I wasn’t going to try and enter the contest because I felt like there were so many more qualified businesses out there that would win. But then I thought — that’s ‘loser talk’! I have always been a risk-taker and have never turned away from a challenge — why would this situation be any different?

So I thought long and hard about my business and how I want it represented. It was a good time of reflection especially during the end of the year to think about how far I’ve come and what my goals are next year. Ultimately, I want to open up a cake studio in a few years because baking has always been a family-oriented activity for me and maybe that’s why I subconsciously decided to make it my career — because it brings back warm, fuzzy memories of my childhood. I want to be able to give those memories to other families as well.

I also thought about The Centre for Dreams (see previous few posts) and how I so want to see their centre grow and multiply. Living your DREAM LIFE is not a privilege but a right and I feel like everyone should have a fair chance at doing so (whether you have a disability or not). Once you achieve your dream and are living that life, people will not categorize you as having a disability anymore but truly inspirational.

Anyways, those are snippets from my story. You can read the rest when you click the link! The winner will be determined by the # of votes received per entry and I SO DESPERATELY want to win! I know it might be easy to set up fake Facebook accounts and give myself extra votes but I want to do this the HONOURABLE way and have people vote for me. I know I have a huge support group and that if I win, it will be because of them!

Here’s the link to vote. You can vote ONCE per day until December 18th. That’s TWO WEEKS of voting fun! :) Be sure to “SHARE” my story as well and get more people in on it. If I win, I’m having a HUGE cupcake party and everyone’s invited! :)

Once again, thanks for your support! :)

Dreams Do Come True :)

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

This past weekend I got to attend The Centre for Dreams’ annual fundraising gala and I got the privilege of sponsoring their “Lite Delights” table with lots and lots of cupcakes! I got to talk to a lot of volunteers there as well and I must say, I was very touched by all the stories they shared with me.

But before I continue, let me backtrack a little and tell you about this organization!

The Centre for Dreams is a grassroots organization that is home to 33 adults (21-years-old+) living with a developmental disability. Their mission is to help them become more independent and integrate them into the community by focusing on their abilities rather than their disABILITIES, as well as building their self-confidence. They do this by teaching them life skills, social skills, job training, alternative therapy and active living programs. There are currently 1,200 individuals on the waiting list in YORK REGION ALONE waiting to attend a program like this and every year, approximately 200 people with a developmental disability graduate in Ontario — adding more to the already staggering numbers. Each year, the Centre receives roughly $60,000 from the government which is next-to-nothing considering how their operating costs alone are around $380,000. This organization was started by Elaine Vollett, 16 years ago, when her son John graduated from high school and needed something to be involved in. And from there, DREAMS has evolved tremendously and even starred in two movies that aired on the Disney Channel!

I visited DREAMS for the first time on October 16th and I must say, I was NOT expecting my mind to be blown and my heart to feel as much as I had expected. I’ve sort of hit a plateau in terms of achieving what I want out of my life. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still living my DREAM LIFE every single day creating art out of simple ingredients (flour, sugar, butter, fondant, glitter… :P ) and am so honoured that people invite me to celebrate milestones with them but even though my passion is highly-satisfying, I felt like I wasn’t doing enough. I wanted to help more people and truly make a difference in another person’s life but I didn’t know how to get from Point A to Point B. That morning before I went to DREAMS, I had asked God to SHOW ME what His next step for my life was. He knew the desires of my heart (look up Psalms 37:4) and I trusted that in His perfect time, He will reveal what He wanted me to do!

I brought cupcakes with SPARKLY STARS on it which is a part of DREAMS’ logo and a cheque from a fundraiser I held in the summer. When I entered the building, it felt very homey. The dark chocolate hardwood floors and trendy furniture looked so new and the members’ artwork on canvases added a splash of colour to the cornflower blue walls. I could feel the warmth emanating in the atmosphere and it felt good. My friend, Justin (who works there) gave me a tour of the Centre and he said they just moved in a few months before. Everything from the floors to the custom-made desks were all donated from various companies and that simple fact made my heart happy because I love it when companies realize a need around them and actually help their community out!

After speaking with Justin for a bit, he took me to their activity room where they were rolling diplomas for Seneca College. They pay them to do this and they love it because they are contributing to society. I wish more companies would see them for their abilities and how they too can make a difference in others’ lives! I was REALLY nervous when Justin took me to the activity room because I didn’t want any special attention or recognition about the money I brought because it was purely on donations and the help of my entire team (not just me) so I didn’t want to take credit for it. Justin introduced me and everyone said, “HI JENN!” and when he told them that I brought cupcakes, they were clapping/cheering and a few of the guys were even jumping up and down. It was the most genuine, heartfelt response I’ve ever gotten for CUPCAKES (something that I make every day and can do with my eyes closed). Justin asked, “What do you say?” and in unison, everyone gave me the SWEETEST, “THANK YOUUUUU!”. I kept smiling and GOD BLESS MY SMALL ASIAN EYES because if I had stopped smiling, I would’ve started CRYING. My heart melted and at that VERY MOMENT, God said to me… “your life’s purpose is BIGGER than yourself, your family and your dreams. I want you HERE, right now, to help me restore this earth back to its original creation. I want YOU to HELP ME tell the stories of those whose stories go untold. You asked me what your next step was and I am telling you right now. You belong here”.

Incredible! (How do you not get emotional after such a revelation?)

Justin said that we’re going to take a group photo and for everyone to go into the classroom. When we were walking there, a lot of the members came up to me and asked what my favourite cupcake flavour was and what my favourite cupcake show was. When I said that I liked Cupcake Wars, one of the members’ faces LIT UP and said that he loved that show too. The charm and childlike wonderment was so pure and undeniable. The fact that we found a “connection” was so special and touched the deepest part of my soul. After we snapped a few photos, one of the guys came up to me and asked when I will be back to visit them again and I said, “Hopefully soon!” and he gave me a high-five (which hurt a little but let’s ignore that) and then I heard him tell his friends that I would be back soon and they all high-fived each other. Then I thought, “Why would they be so happy to have me back again? I’m no one special”.

When I posted this picture on my Facebook wall, a friend of mine pointed out one of the guys and said that he got into a lot of fights with neighbourhood kids due to misunderstandings and that the past few years have been especially difficult on him since his mother’s passing. My heart broke. Everyone’s story is so incredibly unique and I want to get to know each member individually so I can help them and also learn from them.

I left that day with a new-found purpose for my life. Knowing that SO many people are on the waiting list and that they can only accept a certain number of people just breaks my heart because DREAMS is a DIRECT SOLUTION to such an urgent need we have in our community and they should be able to accept unlimited people. I spoke to one of the volunteers at this weekend’s gala and her two brothers are currently members. She said that her family can see such a positive difference that DREAMS has had on them and I realized that this place isn’t just a community program where members go every day. It is a place where confidence is built, DREAMS ARE REALIZED and lives are changed. It is a place where EMPOWERMENT occurs and a place where LOVE and ACCEPTANCE is woven into every heart.

I was so inspired that day and they reminded me of the simple truth that EVERYONE is unique and beautiful in their own way.

I can’t wait to post about the gala! :)

Warm Fuzzies

Remember the Kai Lan/Thomas cake a few weeks ago? I had encrypted a secret message at the back–a direct quote from the show itself.

If you’ve never heard of Ni Hao Kai Lan, check it out:

Okay, so I messed up the quote a LITTLE… it’s suppose to be “You make my heart FEEL super happy”. I got most of it right… that counts, right? I want a daughter like Kai Lan (yes, I want a daughter made from colours and lines! :P )… someone who is fun, adventurous and has a soft spot for her grandparents. I just realized that this girl’s playful spirit captures the one I had when I was young. Except I didn’t play with lions, monkeys, hippos and koalas that aspire to be pandas. But seriously, how fun would playdates at my house be?! (“FUN” and with lots of parental supervision!) ;)

Hi, My Name is…

Monday, August 29th, 2011

Meet Anthony Bird. He’s the newest addition to Angry Birds Rio :) THE RESEMBLANCE IS UNCANNY! I’m going to sculpt birds from peoples’ faces from now on. I mean, look at them! They’re practically TWINS! :) Don’t steal my idea ;)

What Passion Looks Like

Friday, August 26th, 2011

It’s 3:48am and I am putting the finishing touches to my daisy+bee cupcake toppers. I would much rather be in my cozy bed especially since I’m recovering from dizzy spells (not fun!) and need to sleep more… or maybe that’s just an excuse to sleep more :P Anywho! I got a last minute order for another cake for Saturday so I’m hustling to get these daisies done.

I’ve been exchanging e-mails with an old high school friend and we’re just catching up on each others’ lives. He asked me what I do and I said that I make designer cakes and work as a marketing consultant for Rocky Mountain. Then he asked, “Isn’t that a lot of work? Don’t you get tired of it?”… I didn’t even have to think TWICE and I said, “When you’re passionate about what you do, it never feels like work“. I’m so wise! Haha :)

But when the sun is almost rising and your eyelids are heavy… that’s another story!

THIS… is what passion looks like. Half-finished bees with freshly-positioned stingers (picture taken with my phone). Even so, I wouldn’t trade this life for anything!

They’ll look better when they’re done–I PROMISE! :) I just watched the finale of Masterchef S2 and after the winner was announced, she said, “This is a thousand dreams come true. My family taught me that, to never give up a dream… that if you want it and if you work hard, anything is possible. Doesn’t matter what the nay-sayers say. I’m proof of that“.

If there are nay-sayers in your life, you can tell my bee to sting them! :)

HAPPY FRIDAY!

Sneak Peek

Friday, February 18th, 2011

I ruined my new workout-and-sleep-early schedule by forcing myself to stay up late tonight. BIG SIGH! But I have a good reason… I’m putting together my portfolio (still). It’s been a long and tedious process and I’m almost done. Anyone who has ever worked with Illustrator/Photoshop to put projects together can empathize with my frustration with saving big files. Nevertheless, I’m very happy with how my portfolio is coming together! Hard work pays off. Remember that! ;)

I’m not sure if I’ll be publishing my portfolio online at the moment. It’s mainly for print purposes. Maybe when if I figure out how to upload it and make it into an interactive online catalogue that you can “flip” through, then you’ll be the first to know. In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek of one of my favourite spreads.

Happy Friday, y’all! :)

My Culinary Quest for Inspiration…

Monday, November 8th, 2010

… in downtown Toronto!

It was a gorgeous weekend and I took advantage of the clear skies and a lazy Sunday afternoon by browsing gourmet and organic grocery shops.  On the agenda?  Pusateri’s (@ Bay/Yorkville) and Whole Foods Market (@ Hazelton Lanes).

Pusateri’s has an amazing pastry display that will render anyone speechless and indecisive.  All of their pastries are outsourced to local bakeries that deliver every day, keeping their display complete and fresh.  If there is a specialty cake or flavour you’re looking for, chances are that you will find it there!  When I used to work for Dufflet as a marketing consultant, the strategy we used of filling the display case with a wide selection of colourful pastries was not only for visual appeal but to overwhelm the customer, influencing their psychological side.  When customers experience that “WOW” feeling, studies show that they are likely to purchase more than they had intended to.

DID YOU KNOW… that I used to work for Pusateri’s?  I made dulce de leche cheesecakes and flourless chocolate cakes for them back in 2005.  There was no greater feeling of accomplishment than after working a long shift and seeing your masterpiece in the display–like a little kid’s parents posting their artwork on the refrigerator door.

Fun times. :)
