Non-Edible Cake

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

When you think of cakes, you probably think of sugar, chocolate, perhaps a fruit filling inside. But have you ever thought of a cake made out of diapers? :)

I made this for a friend who is having twins in the next few weeks. The baby shower got canceled and I said, “Don’t worry… I’ll still make you a cake” ;)

CrafTEAtime Recap

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

As I am waiting for my dough to proof and my goodies in the oven to bake, I’d thought I’d finally sit down and blog about Sunday’s CrafTEAtime. After reading blog posts that other attendees have written, I decided to let you read what they thought about the event instead of me rambling on and on.

There are a few other bloggers who haven’t published their entries yet but I will post them on a separate page when I receive them.

As I was thinking about the event and about the entrepreneurs that I met, three things came to mind. Three vital elements to every successful business. Future entrepreneurs, take note! This may be helpful for your new venture ;)

You have to have passion
It was a refreshing change to be surrounded by other people with such passion for what they do. You can just TELL that they love their job. They are glowing excitement when they talk about their product. They just can’t help it! Passion or “heart” is not something you can learn or acquireyou just have to have it. I admire people with passion and who pursue it. It’s so rare nowadays. I have seen one too many people stuck at jobs they don’t like, jobs that only provide them with a paycheck every two weeks but rob them of their joy… jobs that consume their souls. People who are daring enough to pursue their passion say, “That’s enough—I deserve to be happy!” and do their own thing. I love those people.

You have to have a support group
I don’t know where I’d be if I didn’t have supportive family and friends to encourage me every step of the way. Starting your own business is not easy. Sure, the hours are flexible, you get to be your own boss and you don’t have to wear business casual attire to work but it’s not always cupcakes and sprinkles! It’s tough when you don’t know when your next paycheck is coming or the amount. It’s disappointing when the cupcake that you bake does not look like the one in the cookbook. Or it’s 3am and you’re still cutting fondant Elmos that does not look like him anymore. You just want to give up because that’s the easiest road to take. But when you have people around you to encourage you to pull up your socks and carry on, you are reminded that you are not alone on this journey!

You have to have fun!
You have to love what you do. You have to smile and laugh. I smiled and laughed so much on Sunday that my face hurt! It’s important to stay positive, look on the bright side and see the glass as half full. A positive attitude is contagious. When you are passionate and love what you do, the “fun” comes naturally.

This is my longest post to date! I hope you enjoyed a glimpse of my thoughts :) I have to get back to baking now… stay tuned for the next few days! I have some exciting blog posts coming your way including February’s Daring Baker’s Challenge desserts (yes, there’s TWO this month!), a new feature called “Cupcake Me” Mondays and a peek at what I couldn’t resist buying at St. Lawrence Market today. Happy Weekend, everyone! :)

Sneak Peek

Friday, February 18th, 2011

I ruined my new workout-and-sleep-early schedule by forcing myself to stay up late tonight. BIG SIGH! But I have a good reason… I’m putting together my portfolio (still). It’s been a long and tedious process and I’m almost done. Anyone who has ever worked with Illustrator/Photoshop to put projects together can empathize with my frustration with saving big files. Nevertheless, I’m very happy with how my portfolio is coming together! Hard work pays off. Remember that! ;)

I’m not sure if I’ll be publishing my portfolio online at the moment. It’s mainly for print purposes. Maybe when if I figure out how to upload it and make it into an interactive online catalogue that you can “flip” through, then you’ll be the first to know. In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek of one of my favourite spreads.

Happy Friday, y’all! :)

Late Night Update

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

Hi everyone! It is 3:24am and I cannot sleep. A Sweets Affair was tonight and the turnout was better than I had expected. I want to send a big and heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you who came out tonight to support Joni and Friends, a non-profit organization that sends wheelchairs for people who have been affected by disability in third world countries. I had fun meeting all of you tonight and my spirits were uplifted by your kind words.

I’m also excited about…

* Valentine’s Day
* realizing I haven’t watched this week’s episode of The Big Bang Theory and it is downloading as I blog
* February’s Daring Baker’s Challenge (will be posted on the 27th)
* browsing Psalms 91:1 Accessories website for new jewelry
* supportive and loving family and friends
* CrafTEAtime next Sunday
* chocolate soy milk
… and finally, the beckoning of my bed after a long week of post-workout soreness, standing in the kitchen for 12 hours straight and mental exhaustion/elation.

Happy weekend, everyone!

So Sweet!

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

My brother came back from Vancouver tonight and bought me a bag full of pocket gel sanitizers from Bath and Body Works! :)   I’m so touched not because of the fact that he bought them for me but that he thought of me.  It’s always nice to know that someone’s thinking about you :)   I’m a simple girl to please.

In other news, the cake I made tonight was a disaster.  I’m not even going to bother posting pictures here because it might break my camera lens from its mugliness.  *sigh*  Let’s just say, I had better days.  The actual cake does not look like the vision I had in my head at all.  Boo.  You win some, you lose some, right?

I’m going to babysit my nephew tomorrow.
That always cheers me up! :)

He’s my real-life fresh baked cookie!  Cause just like those cookies, I can never get enough of him!
:)

I am making a special cake!

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

:)

I make cakes based on the concept given to me by my clients or in some cases, they give me their ideas and I design it for them.  But what happens when I am the baker/designer AND client?  Inspiration overload!  I am making a special cake tonight… or should I say, I am making a cake for someone special!

And I am stuck!  There are so many things I want to do but the cake is only so big.  It started out as one tier, then two… now THREE!  I have to stop myself before the cake grows any taller.

Check back for pictures!

Cassava Pudding

Friday, December 24th, 2010

I just made a batch of cassava pudding and it is still (after many, many years) my favourite all-time dessert.  I can eat this for breakfast, lunch and dinner!  It’s not a cake and not quite a pudding consistency… it’s sort of in the middle.  Did I mention that it is HEAVENLY?

Remember a few posts back, I mentioned that I wanted to give different types of cookies as my gifts for people and not the ones I have in my holiday line (just so it’s special)?  Well, I decided to give away cassava pudding instead because it can kick any cookie’s bum any day! :)

At festive family gatherings, we all fight for the leftover pudding so this year, I’ll be making 2 extra batches and packaging them in cutesy boxes so that we won’t have to battle it out.  That’s my gift to everyone!  Done.

In other news… how cute are these!?

Last Minute Orders

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Just when I thought I was done baking for the year, I get a bunch of last-minute orders.  I’m not complaining.. I’m quite grateful :)   I’ve been so busy baking for other peoples’ orders that I forgot to bake for my own gifts… oops!  I’m putting together a few gift baskets of my favourite things for other people which includes:  Bath and Body Works anti-bacterial soap,  dark chocolate from Soma Chocolate and cookies from my holiday edition! :)

If I had more space, I would include Taylor Swift’s newest CD “Speak Now”,  KitchenAid’s Chef’s Chopper Series 3-cup Pink Mini Food Processor and a gift certificate to Chapters.ca.  Oops!  That’s from my personal wish list… but I’m sure you get the point :)

Okay… back to work.

WHY is the holiday season so stressful?  Have you ever had a stress-free season?

Good Life

Friday, November 19th, 2010

My kitchen table is covered with cookies, colourful boxes, spools of ribbon of every type (satin, organza, wired, 1.5″, 5/8″), scissors, tape, cookie cutters, labels, cellphane bags, business cards… you name it!

I love this time of year :)

I have a delivery downtown tomorrow for my biggest corporate order to date. I’m surprised I got everything done so quickly.  HIGH FIVE for time management skills! *high5!*… it only took 20something years to acquire those skills but hey–some people never get it.  I’m one of the lucky few.

I’m excited for tomorrow… my first day off this week.  There will be no baking allowed.  Maybe I’ll stop by the Distillery District or St Lawrence Market to scout out rare/interesting ingredients.

I hear it’s going to be a beautiful day :)

Happy Friday, everyone!
