My Birthday

Monday, May 20th, 2013

This past weekend was CRAZY BUSY with tons of birthday celebrations, 4 CAKES (!!!) and a trip to the states tomorrow for (yep!)– another celebration. That will be cake #5.

I gifted myself with a CANDY CRUSH cake this year because… I’m a nerd like that.

My heart gasped when I cut it. Will post more details later. Have an amazing long weekend! xo

More from Damien’s Cake

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Here are some more detailed shots of Damien’s cake. I love, love LOVE details and anyone who has had one of my cakes knows this statement to be true. The birthday boy’s mom was so happy with the cake that she sent me multiple messages filled with gratitude.

It took me over an hour to hand cut his name and it was SO worth it! I love how it came out! :D

“Hiiiiiii Jennifer!

I just need to tell you that you are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo TALENTED!!!! This cake was ridiculiously amazing!!! The detail on it is off the hook and everyone at the party couldn’t stop taking about it. At one point Damien just sat in front of the cake and was staring and forgot that there was a party going on around him….lol…he said I just want to look at my cake please..lol it was so cute. Honestly Jennifer, I wish I could have picked the cake up from you to give you a big hug and show you how much it meant to Damien he really LOVED IT! His reaction was WOW lol.
We can’t thank you enough you are truly gifted!

xoxo”

BEST. MESSAGE… EVERRR!!!! :D

Grandma’s Birthday Cake

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

We celebrated our grandmother’s 80th birthday on Friday with a Chinese banquet dinner with our whole family. It was a crazy night with loot bags, centerpieces for each table, slideshows, bouquets and bouquets of flowers… and cake :)

I’ve never sculpted so much in my life before and after 3 consecutive days of very little sleep coming off from a crazy week the week before, it was SO worth it! I’ll write more later because I need to start on this week’s orders. It’s a little “off” these few days. Most of my orders are on Friday/Saturday but all my orders are on weekdays this week! I’m not complaining. I’m grateful :D

Zachary’s Birthday

Friday, April 5th, 2013

Hi everyone! Happy Friday! :D I hope you’re enjoying this beautiful day.. the weekend looks promising! ;)

It was my Zachary’s 4th birthday yesterday — I can’t believe he’s 4 already! Where has the time gone?! My life changed 4 years ago all because of him and I’m so excited for our future filled with fun and crazy adventures.

This will be a short post today because I’m SWAMPED with orders (but in a good way :P )… so here’s a picture I snapped of Z and his cake. Will explain the design later and will post two videos about his cake. If you want to see the videos, check out Sweet Escapes’ Facebook page

“Love You Forever”

Sunday, March 10th, 2013

Baby announcement cake from this weekend :) I had troubles letting this one go! I want to make one for myself and not eat it but stare at it. And take selfie pictures with it and post it on Instagram. And every other social media outlet available.

I miss my cake.

Tiramisu and Vanilla Bean Scones

Tuesday, March 5th, 2013

Jon bought me two bottles of hard-to-find vanilla bean paste that I have been looking for since forever! He also likes vanilla bean scones from Starbucks in which I scolded him for buying it and not asking me to make it first. His birthday was this week so I decided to make him… you got it!! Vanilla bean scones! Good job, detective! ;)

Drooling yet? I can’t look at these pictures because I still have dough and glaze in the fridge and could easily make them right now. But I will not. I cannot. I have to salvage whatever self-control and discipline I have left. I must not. I must not look at this photo anymore… I… stop it! Picture, STOP LOOKING AT ME AND TEMPTING ME WITH YOUR DELICIOUSNESS!!! :(

He was so happy with these and shared it with everyone at church on Saturday, including one of my kids (Alan) who is 11ish. I think the one Alan ate was a magic scone because it flipped a switch inside his head and for the rest of the night, he kept following me and asked questions about cupcakes, sweets and pastries in general. He asked where my shop is located, what else I can make, what’s in the vanilla scones that make it so delicious. It was so adorable and it made my heart melt :)

Then, for whatever reason, I decided to make THESE. These delicious, addictive, magical mini cuppycakes of happiness. I fell in love all over again. It’s a mini vanilla cupcake soaked in a Kahlua espresso syrup topped with a whipped chantilly cream. Even when typing that sentence, I closed my eyes and thought about the first time I had that flavour combo and I was taken away again. I’m so thankful I don’t have any left and that they’re all at Gary’s. BTW, Gary is the photographer for my new website (will share details with you later ;) winkwink!). Jon said that these were the “best cupcakes he’s ever tasted from me”. Jon always knows the right thing to say! This wasn’t too sweet because it was topped with chantilly cream (vs heavy buttercream) and Asians with their super-sensitive-sweets-palette can pop a few without feeling guilty. I know this because I was one of them. Dang it!!

On top of combat, I am now doing 3 days of dance and a sports-conditioning class which I am suppose to be kicking butt in but ironically it is kicking MY butt. Since adapting to this new and intense training schedule (which is amazing but my body is sore all the time–the good kind of sore), I started gaining a lot of MUSCLE. I know this because my clothes don’t fit anymore (yay for shopping time!) and people whom I haven’t seen in a while have made comments about how they don’t recognize me anymore… including my shop consultant at my favourite business attire clothing store. Miraculously, I fit into sizes that I’ve never fit into before. Life is pretty good right now! Except this week BECAUSE I have to increase my training sessions because I had um… way too much delicious food in the past few days. I had 2x mini tiramisu cupcakes… and a few *cougH* scones… (omg, if you had them fresh out of the oven dipped in vanilla bean glaze, you’d be all over it too!), grilled cheese sandwich and mango tofu smoothie (mango juice + tofu, blended). SO… good… and so worth the extra training sessions! ;) Hopefully my recent weight gain was because of muscle and not because of the buttery, sugary, deliciousness of sin. Sigh.

I’m doing my physically assessment today to track my progress. WISH ME LUCK! ;)

Friendors Unite!

Monday, March 4th, 2013

Last week’s OSCARS CHARITY EVENT was a huge hit! It was a formal event with lots of late 20s/early 30s up & comers in attendance who work in the wedding industry. There were a few people who I was really excited to meet and I was so glad there was an opportunity to do so. Connecting with fellow entrepreneurs is a treat for me because we all understand what it’s like to run our own business and live every day actively pursuing what we love to do. It is truly a different lifestyle. I love chatting with them about their passion and the first step they took to realizing it. I love seeing the twinkle in their eye, the glow from their faces that they just cannot contain and not to mention the big smile stretched from ear to ear when they talk about photography, wedding planning, make-up, hairstyling, film-making, jewelry design and everything in between. There’s a special connection that cannot be described with words alone. How they feel about their passion is how I feel about mine.

Here’s a photo we took at the end of the night with a few “friendors” (vendors + friends). I really, really love this picture (even if my Asian eyes are CLOSED. AHH) because even though we have all worked on the same wedding/event in the past, we rarely get to see each other on-site. The make-up artist would do the bride and bridesmaids’ make-up in the morning, the photographer would be running around from one place to another with his assistant capturing timeless moments and the cake-maker (MEE!!) would deliver the cake in the afternoon/evening. It’s like an episode of SERENDPITY (one of my fave cheesy romantic movies) — wedding edition! :) So it was nice that we all got to take a photo together. You know, capture the memory ;)

I never realized how important it is to have a solid support group of people who believe in you. Often times, usually late at night when I want to GIVE UP on my work and take the easy way out, it’s these people here that smack common sense into me and encourage me to continue on. Sometimes, that’s all you really need! ;)

I’m so incredibly grateful that I am not alone on this journey. That’s why I want to help other people pursue their passion and join our exclusive entrepreneurs’ club. Life is too short to work somewhere you don’t like, just for the “paycheck”. Money can be earned in so many ways. All the bitterness and frustration that you harbour from hating your job will spill over to other parts of your life (namely your relationships) and it is a downward spiral from there. When you interact with other people, ask them about what they do for a living and you can truly see who is happy and who is not. I sincerely hope that you are HAPPY where you are because if you are not, it’s time to do some self-reflection and scope out other opportunities.

If you’re interested, I might have something for you ;)

My Second Fondant Cake (ever!)

Monday, February 4th, 2013

DISCLAIMER** please note that this cake was made 2.5 years ago and the quality and workmanship of the cake does not reflect my current skill set as a cake artist. For recent cake projects, kindly scroll down to see other posts or click the categories on the right sidebar. Thank you muchly. Merci beaucoup. Muchas Gracias :)

I just thought I’d include that up there just in case people thought this is the “best that I can do” at this given time ;)

I love their surprised expressions. This is the best part of being a cake artist :D

The second cake I’ve ever made and the FIRST tiered cake had a SUSHI, TURTLE and GOLF theme to it. (Um, what now?!) I had my company for not even a month before I decided to push my limits and tie a bunch of totally-not-related themes together for my uncle, aunt and cousin’s birthdays. My auntie Tina loves sushi. My uncle Billy loves golf and my cousin Rachel loves turtles.

Wow, Zach is so tiny here! I miss baby Zach!

I wanted to make a gigantic golf course with turtles crawling around and eating sushi. (A sushi-eating turtle?! Do those even exist? Maybe in Japan) I quickly scrapped that idea. Somehow I came up with this design. As you can see, the layers were stubby (I dislike stubby tiers!), it’s lopsided and let’s just say THANK GOD I’ve improved since then. I hope :P Miraculously, I didn’t use dowel rods in the bottom tier to support the top tier (in my defense, I didn’t know I had to use supporting materials). Surprisingly, this cake kept it together! I think the bottom tier was really dense… yes, that must be it! :) I’ve since made MOIST cakes so dowels are a must.

Uncle Billy loves golf

And finally… the sushi-loving aunt and her adorable kids…

I love Jason’s expression here because he was just scolded for punching Jess in the stomach and was forced to be in this photo, unwillingly.

There you have it! That’s my crazy family and the story of my second-ever fondant cake that miraculously didn’t fall apart without dowel supports. Isn’t it wonderful when life just works out? :D

BACK from VACATION!

Monday, January 21st, 2013

Hi everyone! I’m finally snapping out of holiday mode. While most people had to go back to work in early January, I took 6 glorious weeks off, went to a bunch of fun places and now I’m back, for good. Or, for now ;) I just got back from LA yesterday afternoon and am adjusting from the 25C weather to… whatever you want to call what we’re experiencing. Ha ha… :P

Here’s a quick snapshot of what’s been going on!

We took the boys to LEGOLAND and it was so fun! Everything was made out of Lego and let’s just say, THEY were the boss that day! Who taught Zachary how to read a map?! He would point to a direction and say, “let’s go there!” and we’d follow him like his little slaves. It was fun though! :)

This was at Tim and Joanna’s wedding with my bestest Bear! Look! We both match — purple!! :)

Me at Dolcissimo at the Shops at Chino Hills. It was a cutesy little bakery and there I was, doing “competitor research” :P

One of the best Korean BBQ places I’ve ever been too — at Rowland Heights. Here with the cousins! I smelled like meat for days :P We ordered one of every item on the menu — and when it time for VEAL CHITTERLINGS, I almost lost it. You can google it. It was… tubey :S

Mom’s SURPRISE birthday lunch at the Olive Garden. A good family friend owns a ginormous bakery in LA and gave us a box of petit fours. They were absolutely DELICIOUS and talking to him has given me a lot of insight for my business. Can’t wait to work on those ideas!

In other news: look who got a feature in Ryerson’s Alumni magazine?! Even though they called my company ‘Cake Designs’, at least they got the website right… which is all that matters! ;) I’ve been so blessed this past year and this was definitely the cherry on top! 2013 will be an amazing one.

And after MUCH reflection on everything that happened in 2012, my greatest achievement was losing 17.9% body fat in just a year. My clothes don’t fit anymore but I’m too cheap to go on a shopping spree so I’m just going to make do with what I have, for now! Ha ha.. spoken like a true Asian girl! ;) 2012 has been the best year of my life not only for my business but for personal achievements as well. If you want to know how I did it, don’t be shy and send me an e-mail! I would love to help other people be successful as well!! :)

I don’t even recognize the “before” girl anymore. WHO IS SHE?!?!

Exciting News!

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012

Hi Everyone!
I’m super excited to be chosen as one of the finalists for Purolator’s Small Business Challenge for a chance to win a $10,000 business grant. We had to write an inspirational story of how our company came to be and how it actively seeks to inspire other business owners. At first, I wasn’t going to try and enter the contest because I felt like there were so many more qualified businesses out there that would win. But then I thought — that’s ‘loser talk’! I have always been a risk-taker and have never turned away from a challenge — why would this situation be any different?

So I thought long and hard about my business and how I want it represented. It was a good time of reflection especially during the end of the year to think about how far I’ve come and what my goals are next year. Ultimately, I want to open up a cake studio in a few years because baking has always been a family-oriented activity for me and maybe that’s why I subconsciously decided to make it my career — because it brings back warm, fuzzy memories of my childhood. I want to be able to give those memories to other families as well.

I also thought about The Centre for Dreams (see previous few posts) and how I so want to see their centre grow and multiply. Living your DREAM LIFE is not a privilege but a right and I feel like everyone should have a fair chance at doing so (whether you have a disability or not). Once you achieve your dream and are living that life, people will not categorize you as having a disability anymore but truly inspirational.

Anyways, those are snippets from my story. You can read the rest when you click the link! The winner will be determined by the # of votes received per entry and I SO DESPERATELY want to win! I know it might be easy to set up fake Facebook accounts and give myself extra votes but I want to do this the HONOURABLE way and have people vote for me. I know I have a huge support group and that if I win, it will be because of them!

Here’s the link to vote. You can vote ONCE per day until December 18th. That’s TWO WEEKS of voting fun! :) Be sure to “SHARE” my story as well and get more people in on it. If I win, I’m having a HUGE cupcake party and everyone’s invited! :)

Once again, thanks for your support! :)
