Living the Good Life

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Hi everyone! :) It’s been a madhouse here lately. I should come to expect this of this life I chose of running 3 businesses. BALANCE is key! I’ve taken a few weeks off of cake stuff to build my other two babies. It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience so far and I’m enjoying every minute of it. I wouldn’t trade this life for anything else! :) Are there any entrepreneurs out there? You know what I’m talking about! ;)

One of the things I love about being an entrepreneur is the time freedom and the simple fact that I can prioritize my life and have a healthy work/life balance. My nephews are growing up SO quickly and I just want to savour each moment with them. Tonight I got a tour of one of the best MMA gyms in Toronto where all the UFC fighters go to teach classes. It was so intimidating but so much fun at the same time (um, to watch of course!).

Enjoy this Mickey Clubhouse cake I made a few weeks ago. Mickey will never get old in my books ;) Happy Thursday!

I’m a Friend of the Scarecrow

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

This post is a month late but it’s too cute not to post! Remember back in December when I got to attend Bravo TV’s finale taping of WAY OFF BROADWAY – The Wizard of Oz Musical? The director, Sarina Condello, ordered these lovebear cupcakes for Valentine’s Day.

Here’s my story of how Sarina and I connected.

I always wanted to make cupcakes for the cast and crew of a musical production. Don’t ask why. It’s one of those random things I always wanted to do. After I saw WICKED last year, I made a witch’s hat and a broomstick cupcake and thought, wouldn’t it be cool if the cast and crew got these cupcakes after one of their performances? I even specially ordered black cupcake liners with green polka dots on it for the photos. I used 6 out of 100 and the 94 are packed away in a clear box in my basement marked, ”What was I thinking?” If you’re ever in need if 94 black cupcake liners with green polka dots on it, you have my e-mail! ;)

When I found out my friend Jon was in this 8-week series that follow amateur theatre performers pursuing their dream of performing on Broadway, I KNEW I had to get in contact with the director somehow. I was ecstatic when I found out they would be doing WIZARD OF OZ of all musicals! This was my chance. Even if I had to VOLUNTEER to make these cupcakes, I would do it. I wanted to be a part of it SO badly.

Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t desperate or anything. I didn’t see it as my chance to be “discovered” and suddenly I’d be Bravo’s official cupcake-maker. I just simply wanted to be a part of it. As an entrepreneur, as a self-employed business owner, if you don’t constantly push yourself to improve—no one will. Setting these small goals encouraged me to push myself to talk to people I wouldn’t normally talk to, to do something differently and to get different results. So what if the director didn’t respond to me? At least I tried.

I e-mailed Sarina, introduced myself and literally said, “Hi I’m Jenn and I’m a friend of Jon’s (you know, the scarecrow)”. YES, that is exactly what I said. Never in a million years did I ever think I’d start an e-mail stating that I was a friend of a scarecrow. But that’s “so me” :D Luckily, she responded and wanted me to make cupcakes for their finale party. I was so excited that she was taking a chance on me. I wasn’t expecting much—I didn’t want to set my hopes too high just in case the answer was, “no”.

I wanted to train myself to seek out opportunities and make things happen for myself instead of “waiting to be discovered”. So many of us wait for the perfect opportunity to come knocking at our doors but life doesn’t work like that. The happiest people are the ones who go out to find those opportunities and make something of their lives. If they don’t, they will spend their whole lives waiting and sadly, they will never get that time back.

WAY OFF BROADWAY premiered three weeks ago and I’m so addicted to it. In an interview when Sarina was looking for her performers, she said, “My show is going to have a lot of HEART” and that line stuck out to me. I try to live every day of my life with a lot of HEART whether I am sculpting fondant bears or e-mailing clients back on cake designs. I believe that if you have HEART, it will show through everything you do.

Three years ago when I was still living downtown, my friend and I were chatting on MSN and I asked him what was ONE quality his future wife had to have. Without hesitation he said, “She has to have a BIG heart”. Ever since then, I’ve been looking for this “heart” in others as well. I get so excited when I meet people with this “HEART” because I think, “Wow! This is what TRUE HEART looks like!” There is something so different about this show. It’s not just an 8-week production, it’s a journey. The way Sarina interacts with these performers really shows that she cares for them. She is passionate about helping others discover their inner performer and she will go the extra mile to do whatever it takes to help that person.

Here’s a link to watch all the episodes of WAY OFF BROADWAY on Bravo. Enjoy! :D xoxo

Bunny Cake

I’m not used to making pastel cakes but I love the simplicity and innocence of this cake.

Hiya Fluffy! :D

Warm Fuzzies

Remember the Kai Lan/Thomas cake a few weeks ago? I had encrypted a secret message at the back–a direct quote from the show itself.

If you’ve never heard of Ni Hao Kai Lan, check it out:

Okay, so I messed up the quote a LITTLE… it’s suppose to be “You make my heart FEEL super happy”. I got most of it right… that counts, right? I want a daughter like Kai Lan (yes, I want a daughter made from colours and lines! :P )… someone who is fun, adventurous and has a soft spot for her grandparents. I just realized that this girl’s playful spirit captures the one I had when I was young. Except I didn’t play with lions, monkeys, hippos and koalas that aspire to be pandas. But seriously, how fun would playdates at my house be?! (“FUN” and with lots of parental supervision!) ;)

Pure & Utter Heartbreak

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I love it when clients send me pictures of the birthday boy/girl posing with their cake. It gives me warm fuzzies in my heart :) You know what else makes me happy? Really, really, really cute kids! And cake! Like the kiddies at Justin’s 2nd birthday celebration.

The birthday boy is the one on the very left.

Here’s a closer look at the ever-so-silly-looking Mater! I love his crooked teeth. It’s so crooked and endearing (yes, teeth can be endearing! :D )

*the following image may be too much for some of you to handle. So if you have a heart condition… or at least a semi-functioning heart with a bit of emotions… tread carefully. You’ve been warned*

TOLD YOU!

How heartbreaking is this photo!? I almost cried when I saw it for the first time. So many questions raced through my mind… WHO DID THIS? HOW DID IT HAPPEN? DID ANYONE TRY TO STOP IT? DID IT HURT, MATER… DID IT HURT?!? MCQUEEN… CAN YOU STILL HEAR ME?? The tears were real. If McQueen still had eyes/tear ducts, I’m sure he would cry too.

And then, I saw the evidence!

A picture is worth a thousand words and the words that came to my head were: PURE & UTTER HEARTBREAK. I know it sounds silly but I was kind of bummed when I saw these pictures. Who knew cake-making would be so emotional? It took me less than 30 minutes to sculpt these two characters and even though they’re made out of fondant, crispy rice cereal and LOVE… (lots of love)… these characters really came to life and I did get attached to them.

I posted these pictures on my FB with the word “HEARTBREAK” on it and one of my teammates commented and made a good point: the life purpose of CAKES is to make people happy. Cakes aren’t made to be put on display, they’re meant to be EATEN! They are meant to be destroyed in a comical and entertaining fashion (see Justin-the-attacker exhibit above) with family and friends to share in the moment. Cakes are synonymous with special occasions, they are celebratory in nature and they make for great memories. At the end of the day, if cakes aren’t eaten… they haven’t fulfilled their life purpose. How sad is that?

So therefore silly me… I must get over myself and focus on how happy these cakes make other people and not on the hours of work it takes me to put it together. At the end of the day, my passion is about PEOPLE and the way I connect with them is through cake because behind every cake is a story. And if I have to turn away when shown a picture of Mater and McQueen after their “accident”, that is what I will do because Justin had an amazing 2nd birthday and that is all that matters ;)

Chocolate Chipster Brownies

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

What’s better than chocolate chip cookies and brownies? How about a cutesy little two-bite treat with BOTH of them in it? Yah… let’s do that! :D Our team has meetings every Thursday night and I always like to bring something sweet when I go over to peoples’ houses. My mom taught us to be kind and thoughtful when people invite you to their homes by bringing something… anything! We had a barbecue 10 years ago at our house with about 40 friends and only one person brought something and it was FRENCH ONION DIP. My mom still talks about that today and how thoughtful my friend was :)

Two Thursdays ago I made these cutesy little treats for my team…

I’m not sure about the blue background. It’s a little too sharp for me. I’m still experimenting with different backgrounds so please be patient while my photos look horrible. It’s work in progress!

And here is the “BEFORE” shot. I love my new cookie scoop! :)

Happy Tuesday! ;)

Heffy Makes His Debut

Monday, March 5th, 2012

While looking at my portfolio of cake pictures, my mom made an interesting observation: all my cakes are brightly-coloured. Not just regular colours but the POW POW kind that would make you dizzy if you stare at it too long… like these… (dizzy yet? :D ) She made a point for me to create lighter/pastel-coloured cakes with a softer look so it’s less um… damaging to the retinas! ;) Light-coloured cakes aren’t really my thing but let’s give it a try, shall we? :)

This was made for my cousin Jessica’s 21st birthday. I had full creative powers over this cake and always wanted to do an elephant holding a balloon and… Taaaa-DAAAA! Eek!! HOW CUTE IS HE!?

This makes me want to make a circus cake. Quick! Someone have a circus-themed party so I can make a circus cake! Happy Munday! ;)

Ni Hao Kai Lan

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

This cake makes me happy. How can your spirits not be lifted up with all these pretty colours and cutesy animals? I know I say this about every cake but this was my favourite cake to make! I said that about my first wedding cake, Stellan’s Angry Birds cake and most recently the Tiffany & Co cake. I like to be fair. I don’t play favourites. Well, I secretly do but cakes don’t have ears… they can’t hear my thoughts out loud :)

I was so excited when I received the request to make a Ni Hao Kai Lan cake. Who is Kai Lan? See for yourself >> Ni Hao Kai Lan Intro on Youtube. She is SO adorable! She’s so positive and her songs are super catchy. I fully admit that I watched a few (okay many) clips of her show to get inspiration for this cake and it surely did the trick! Did you watch the clip? I love Grandpa or “yeh yeh” and his jig. Dance Grandpa, dance!

I wanted to include cherry blossoms on the cake to Asian-fy it. I love the sun and his cheeky smile, how all the colours complement each other oh-so-perfectly and WHAT?! Is that a smiley Thomas the Tank Engine there? Yes… it is! :D Apparently the birthday girls (sisters) love to play with Thomas as well. This is the beauty of a fully customized cake… you can make it extra special for the birthday boy/girl by adding personal touches on it. At first I thought, “How is THOMAS… this blue block with a creep-O smile going to FIT into a FUN/HAPPY-GO-LUCKY Kai Lan cake?!” but then I realized that Thomas’ presence add a special sparkle to the cake that is meaningful to the birthday girls and their family. SURE, it will confuse the heck out of my loyal blog readers and people who stumble upon my site when their insomnia strikes (yes, YOU… :P ) but if it will make the cake EXTRA special, I’m all for it. I love Thomas there. He’s causing so much confusion. Trouble MAKER! :D

I was also really intimidated to sculpt Kai Lan. Every detail had to be PERFECT especially her eyes and her dumpling-like hairstyle. I’ve learned in my year or so of sculpting characters (who are suppose to resemble ACTUAL animated characters and not made up ones like how I usually try to pass them as) that their eyes have to be PERFECT (shape/colour/placement) or else they would look drugged up/possessed OR even worse—they would look like their less-than-successful twin brother/sister who’s been in hiding until this cake was created when they decided to spontaneously make their grand debut to the world. Let’s just say, even though Kai Lan’s eyes look super simple, it took me longer-than-expected to make them symmetrical and perfect.

I also lalalove the tiger and the koala. It KILLS me that the koala is wearing a sweater with a panda on it. Yes, I realized that the tiger, koala and panda look a bit… possessed but let’s just say they’re really happy from singing the theme song over and over again that their pupils became dilated. That doesn’t even make sense… haha! But when it’s 3:10am and you’re trying to form proper sentences with a long train of random thoughts, um… I’ll take what I can get! :D I wonder if these guys have names. I shall Google that tomorrow. On another note: I encrypted a secret message on the back of this cake. Will post it another time. Enjoy the cake! :D
