First Name “BAN”.. Last Name “JO”

Friday, January 27th, 2012

What is this?! A blog post!? Is this for real?? Why yes… you are not imagining it. I think it’s the longest I’ve gone without blogging. Sorry, lovelies… it’s been a busy year. After taking 3 weeks off, I’m baccccck. Sort of. Let’s celebrate with some folksy banjo music from Sherald :)

This was my first sculpted instrumental cake and it was super fun to make! It took FOR-EVER to get the arm shape right but with lots of different ingredients, it’s done :) At 5am, I was so exhausted and so frustrated because no matter what angle I looked at it, with wide-open eyes, squinty eyes, fooling myself by turning my head away and turning back really quickly (which made me dizzy!), I couldn’t help but thought it looked like a high-tech frying pan. How cool would that be?! They have different buttons for settings and maybe even a “flip” option to cook your eggs to perfection. This handy device would work itself so you wouldn’t need to keep an eye on it. Omigosh… I should invent this. I’d be rich. Don’t steal my idea :D

Instead of strategically planning out how I was going to make it un-frying pan-like, I was working on my dialogue as to how I was going to respond to my client if/when he asked why it looked the way it did. How do you award-winningly say, “WHAT?! BANJO?? I thought you said frying pan!” while keeping a straight face? I tried and I tried but to no avail. Even thinking about it makes me laugh.

My favourite part of the cake was definitely the details. Gold swags! I bought FDA-approved edible gold powder from Hong Kong (remember Shanghai Street? Oh how I miss you!) but it wasn’t “GOLD” enough. Can’t really expect much for $3CDN! (usually it’s $20+ here for gold) So I mixed lots and lots of pearly colour in it and ta-DA!

My cousin and her fiance loved it… it was for his dad. I’m so excited to see what his reaction will be. These novelty cakes have gained in popularity these past few years thanks to shows like Cake Boss and to receive one as a gift is truly a gift! :) I love how cakes are so versatile and you can do anything with it. ANYTHING! You know what that means! No more __INSERT HERE__ (T&T, Loblaws, Costco, cake mix) cakes for you! :D

After I was finished the cake (6:30am), I realized I spelled BIRTHDAY wrong. It said “BIRTday”… I was hoping the cake recipient wouldn’t notice it OR… hope that “BIRTday” is how banjo players pronounced it?! Maybe?! Anyone??!

Happy Weekend! :)

19 Days

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Can you believe we’re only 19 days into the new year? It’s been the longest and shortest 19 days of my life. So much has already happened in my personal and professional life and I’m so so excited for what 2012 will bring. Everything’s happening so quickly. I wish I could update you but things are still up in the air. Let’s just say… I’ve grown from managing one business to… more than one… and possibly more than two :D I’m such a tease, huh?

Besides being a sugar artist, I’ve always wanted to become a motivational speaker. Or a speaker of some sort! My minor was communications in school and I loved presentations. You must be looking at the monitor thinking, “Is she for real?”… oh yes, it’s true! I love the feeling of butterflies in my stomach moments before I take the stage and the RUSH I get when I begin the presentation. The best part is when that peaceful calm takes over and the presentation flows effortlessly. That is, before I realize I’m naked in front of a room full of strangers and I’m dreaming. Eek! Hate it when that happens!

I started a new blog. Okay, I lied. I thought about starting a new blog but haven’t actually done it yet. It is a blog that documents the simple pleasures in life and it will keep me accountable to fulfill my not-so-NYR (read previous entry) of trying something new every week. It is a blog dedicated to stories, photography and inspiring others to chase after their dreams wholeheartedly. I might post the URL here but I’m not sure yet. I’ll definitely give it to you if you e-mail and ask for it! :) I’m not sure how personal to make it yet, but we’ll see!

Above everything else, I want it to be a blog where I can be real. I want to remember the little things I take for granted every day and document it so I can appreciate it.

Ty’s Cars 2 Cake

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Just thinking about this cake kept me up a lot of nights. My friend, Tim from high school e-mailed me when I was in Hong Kong and placed a cake order for his son’s 1st birthday. He sent me a picture of a cake with the ramp sculpted into it, asked if it was possible and I responded with a nonchalant, “sure!”. But inside, I was freaking out. I’ve seen people do this before but have never done it myself. This cake was going to be a challenge… !

I don’t make new years’ resolutions because my alter ego is a rebel and thinks that rules are made to be broken. Moving forward, my not-so-NYR is to try something new every week. The last week of 2011, I tried something that I didn’t think I’d ever do–snowboarding! :D I knew that if I could conquer my fear of heights (chair lift), falling/looking stupid and having no control over my fast-moving board directed straight to fences/ditches (more on that later), I can do anything I set my mind to!

It was only fitting that this cake was for Jan 2nd… the beginning of 2012, and my new life of leaving my comfort zone every chance I get.

I cried. Oh, I cried.

Firstly, I ran out of ingredients and it was JANUARY 1ST – NEW YEARS’ DAY… nothing’s open on NYD and if it were, it’s really expensive. Secondly, I had a few big orders that I was completing that day as well and let’s just say, the excellent time management skills that I pride myself on having gave way to (a) a concert at ACC) (b) an all-day snowboarding trip and (c) lots of meet-ups with friends. Bad Jenn, bad!

Luckily, the components of the cake came together really well. Thanks to Cristian’s Cars Cake back in December, I had already made Mater before so he didn’t take a lot of time to put together. Guido was super fun to make as well and I can’t help but notice that he looks like Bender’s long-lost cousin. (yes/no?) Guido is Zach’s favourite character and from our many conversations about his latest interests, I know that Guido fixes cars (changes tires etc) … that’s why he’s chasing the tires that are getting away from him. Too cute. Love the freaked-out expression on his face. (that’s the look plastered on my face when I made this cake… har har)

I delivered this cake to Angus Glen Community Centre where the party was held and let’s just say, although I pulled an all-nighter and my body was aching all over, I’m really glad I wore make-up. Tim and I went to high school and university together and studied in similar programs (him = IT, me = business) so we had common friends. Tim’s wife, Tee and I went to ELEMENTARY and high school together so OUR group of friends overlapped as well. I bumped into SO many people from all walks of my life that I haven’t seen in a while. Crazy huh? So boys and girls, remember you never know who you’re going to bump into… so wear something decent and put some make-up on (well, just the girls… not the boys… okay, boys if you want to :) ).

The year started off well. I went snowboarding (conquered my fear), made a cake that had an inset ramp in it, had chai latte (that’s my “something new” for the week) AND I started playing piano again which is the most relaxing and expressive stress-reliever. Can’t wait to see what next week will bring! ;)

Sing It To Me!

Kenny’s musically-inspired Charlie + Sally Brown birthday cake :)

As you can see, I tried to go with a different design concept by using wires and attaching sparkly music notes to add a POP. I also covered the cake in two colours of fondant instead of one–that was a FIRST for me and definitely worth the results! I love the contrasting, yet complementary blue + lilac shades.

I promise I’ll blog more soon. It’s been a rollercoaster of an 11 days and I just want this ride to end. Here’s a sneak peek at my 2012 project:

Enzo’s 100 Day Celebration

Monday, January 9th, 2012

This cupcake tower arrangement was from this weekend’s orders. I mean, HELLO! HOW ARE YOU? Yes, I know… it’s been a while. Last week was the busiest week I’ve ever had and I’m still recovering from the holidays. I’m so looking forward to this week where I can get my life back in order. I have tons and tons of cake photos to post and tons of stories to go along with it. Be patient :)
