My Favourite Street of All

Monday, October 31st, 2011

I’m BACCCCKKK! Did you miss me? :) It’s so surreal to be back. My vacation in Hong Kong was very fast-paced and there was lots to do each day. Our biggest worry was where/when we were going to eat lunch. It was the best two weeks this year, by far! I feel so rested and refreshed – like getting 100 massages! But massages for my mind, body and spirit. If you’re on the fence about taking a vacation, I’d say, “GO FOR IT!” Your day-in and day-out routine will thank you for it! :)

While in Hong Kong, I stopped by Shanghai Street in Mongkok which sold commercial kitchen equipment. This street was like Sesame Street to me – I just want to live there. All the tools and equipment or “toys” as I like to call it, were a fraction of the price if I were to buy it here. I found a store called, “I *HEART* CAKE” and I stayed in there for a good hour. It was STOCKED with cookie cutters, fondant, food colouring, gumpaste tools, cutesy packaging and everything in between! The only bad thing about the store was that it was super small and packed with people and I’m a claustrophobic at heart.

I won’t say anything else… I’ll let the pictures do the talking :)

See what I mean? :D

I bought about $50cdn worth of toys and they filled up two reuseable bags. I had a “FUN” time carrying them home in the cab! Each cookie cutter was 50c, each cutesy character cutter was $2… and all Wilton tools were re-packaged and sold at 1/10th of its North American price. Just thinking about my shopping experience and the goods I brought home makes me heart beat faster.

Stay tuned… more to come! :)

November Special

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Promotions are GREAT! Having an educational background in business/marketing and being a sucker for all things that relate to “giveaways” and “special deals”, I know just how important it is to have a promotion once in a while. I hope to do a different promotion each month not only to encourage people to order goodies but as a gift from me to YOU! I love giving gifts! Tomorrow, I’m heading over to JUSCO to purchase the biggest luggage they have so I can haul all my gifts home. I over-bought but I couldn’t help it! :)

Cheers to you, November!

I’m leaving HK in 3 days! Sniffles :( But I had a lot of fun here. I love sleeping early, waking up early, actually having a proper breakfast and not have a care in the world! Vacations rock :D It feels good to be refreshed and rejuvenated. To all my cakes back home waiting to be designed, I’M READY FOR YOU! :)

Hello from across the world!

Monday, October 24th, 2011

So I totally lied! I said I will post pictures of my trip as I take them but honestly, by 8pm each day, I’m already passed out. I feel so old :) We’re having a BLAST here and my brother described it best when he said, “NEED SECOND STOMACH”. We’ve been eating a LOT. Since we landed last Sunday, with the exception of one dinner, we ate out for every single meal. I’ve never eaten out so much in my life and it’s something I will never get used to. Food is incredibly cheap compared to Toronto but I’m a homegirl at heart and prefer homecooked meals compared to dining out. (yes, I know I had popcorn + rice krispie blob straight out of the bowl a few weeks ago for dinner but it still counts as homecooked! :P )

I have so much to tell you about and I don’t know where to start! I guess I’ll have plenty of time to do so when I get back! In the meantime, enjoy these pictures :)

Passionfruit Crepe Souffle @ BLT Steak

Our tasting menu @ BO INNOVATION – oyster with liquid nitrogen poured on top – SO GOOD!

I’m off to Macau this morning for yep- you got it! More eating :) Pix to come!

Shek O Beach, Hong Kong – 2007

I’m so excited! This day has finally come :) My flight leaves in a few hours and I’m mentally running through my packing list (over and over again) to make sure I didn’t leave anything behind. I love packing light but that’s something I am never able to do. It’s 30 degrees in Hong Kong and feels like 40 with the humidity so I packed lots of summer clothes. It’s going to be strange transitioning from cold, rainy weather to hot, humid weather but I think I’ll manage! :D

I will continue to check my e-mail so keep them coming! I’ll post some pictures of my travels as I upload them so visit often to check it out! Until then.. see ya! ;)

(ps. this was one of my favourite photos from my last trip to Hong Kong. BELIEVE it or not, this was taken by a 5-year-old who was playing around with my camera while his brother and I took a stroll. I love the positioning of all the elements and the backdrop – and I love it when life gives me one of these moments!)

The Birthday Boy

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

You can’t tell but I’m super drugged up. It was a miracle the cake got to our Thanksgiving dinner in one piece. Actually, a panda head fell off and it’s still in my fridge. I was frantically searching around for it in the box but couldn’t find it. That’s why you only see FRONT shots of the cake ;) Tomorrow, I’ll post a picture of someone very important to the story. YUP! Noah himself :)

Lots of LOVE

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

This was another project I did this past weekend. My brother’s co-worker ordered this for his girlfriend’s birthday and simply wanted a PINK and HEART-themed cake/cupcakes. I’m loving the pink silhouette ribbon wrapped around each tier – they tie the whole theme together.

I loved making the heart topper! It was surprisingly easy and it took me one try to make it perfectly smooth – hooray for successes! :D

Noah’s Ark Cake

Monday, October 10th, 2011

This cake was extremely fun to make (as I’m sure you can tell). I was a bit nervous about putting a cake with so much detail together but everything worked out. Aiden loved it :D

The animals were way too cute with their bright colours and beady eyes.

Like these tigers!

And hippos! These were my favourite :)

I wanted to do something fun so I stuck an elephant’s butt in the doorway of the ark. My cousin saw the elephant head above and the body below and thought it was a crazy, warped elephant. How cool would that have been?

We had this at our family’s Thanksgiving dinner last night and it was deeelish! Dark chocolate cake with strawberry buttercream. 4 LAYERS! I love how the colours of the cake and buttercream contrasted each other… black, pink, black pink… mmm!! :p Thanksgiving is my favourite holiday of the year! I LOVE turkey but more than that, I love autumn so any holiday during this season is GREAT!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Wishing you lots of “blessings” on your list :D

Spicy Cheese Crackers

Sunday, October 9th, 2011

I’m still trying to decide if these will be going on my Holiday Cookie Line-up. They are extremely addictive and my kitchen always smells nice when they’re baking in the oven. I used to cut them really thick but I discovered that if I cut them really thinly, they taste better. Cookies are meant to be kept in an airtight container to stay crisp but it was really late when I baked them and I forgot to pack them away. I ate them the next day and they tasted AMAZING! Like cheese chips. So so good (but so so bad at the same time).

I added more cheese on top before I baked them and it was heavenly. Although there’s chilli powder in them, they’re not as spicy as I want it. Maybe I’ll add more next time. If these are available for Christmas, I’ll be in big trouble because they will not make it out. I can eat the broken ones, right? :D

Let it SNOW!

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

The weather’s been up and down lately and LUCKILY for us, this week is an up! :D In 10 days, I will be basking in 30 degree-weather for 14 whole days. SO. EXCITED! But before then, I have 15 dozen cupcakes (one dozen being Angry Birds) and 3 VERY DETAILED celebration cakes (all birthdays) to make. PLUS, the biggest excitement of all? I’m making a wedding cake for a photo shoot next week that may be published in two wedding magazines! *gleEEE!!!* When I started making people fat cakes full-time in January 2010, I didn’t think my company would grow this big, this quickly. I’m very, very thankful for every order and for people like YOU who read my blog. Thank ya!! :D

This weekend, I had the pleasure of making cupcakes and cookie favours for a dear friend of mine. She’s getting married in December and her snowflake-themed bridal shower was on Sunday. I had so much fun making snowflake toppers. I bought navy disco dust a while ago and hated how it looked on cakes. With pixie or rainbow dust, I only need to use a little to get a “WOW” factor. But since navy is so dark, I can’t use just a little… I have to use A LOT! Luckily for these snowflakes, I got carried away. It was quite therapeutic sitting with my paintbrush dusting the snowflakes and giving them life :)

I also made cookie favours. I had designed the tags with my favourite swirly font with the date and a few snowflakes. Lalalooveee the simplicity of the packaging! I’ve been using clear boxes since forever and I love how it showcases the contents while also giving the favour an elegant touch. It can be dressed up or dressed down depending on how much the client wants to spend on “extras”. To me, a coloured ribbon and a tag is just right :) Since the packaging is so simple, the costs are minimized and the client is happy! And since they’re happy, that makes ME happy so I take photos of the product, post it here and you get to read it when your insomnia strikes. EVERYONE WINS! :D

The maid of honour and I kept the cookies and cupcakes as a surprise from the bride and when I delivered it, she loved it! The look of gratitude and happiness on her face made everything from [folding the boxes, designing/printing/cutting the tags, staying up alllllll night to bake+package the cookies, burning two batches of cupcakes + having to redo them, making icing and realize I didn't have enough cream cheese, going to the store at midnight to buy it, cleaning up the messy kitchen, crying after a few snowflakes broke] …

…so incredibly worth it.
