WE ARE FAMILY!

Matthew, Jacob and I were hanging out one afternoon while I was putting a few orders together and we came up with the brilliant idea of making a cake with each of the cousins on it (13 of us, plus a nephew and a 2nd cousin). Good idea, huh? The following 3(ish) hours was the most fun I’ve ever had decorating a cake. It wasn’t so much me decorating it as the boys having fun creating each character with such thought and accuracy as I watched.

We wanted to make everyone so they’d resemble pandas (hence the white and black colour theme) and towards the end, I showed Matt how to colour the fondant – that’s why the “Jenn” and “Mike” characters on the cake are tan-coloured and everyone else is anemic (or how Americans view Canadians, according to the Simpsons).

I’m not sure how this came about but we kept singing, “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge. We even YouTube’d it and the song was playing in the background while we sculpted each character. I came up with the idea of putting, “WE ARE FAMILY” on the cake instead of each person’s name which was time-consuming to cut (and ahem… guess who had to cut them if we actually went through with it?). Jacob wanted to put, “SISTER SLEDGE” on it but that idea was quickly dismissed :)

Watching two teenage boys decorate a cake has to be funniest thing ever. Jacob kept saying, “I have to make a hair patty” which I found hilarious! He wanted to get each person’s hairstyle just right and since I had my hair up that day, I got the “bun” look. I LOOK LIKE A SUMO WRESTLER! Thanks J. Each person had an object next to them that described their personality. I got a cupcake (of course!). Mike got a dumbbell cause I guess he likes to work out (?). Tim, the doctor, got a big red heart because his job requires a lot of “heart” and care. Sebastien and Jason each got a hockey stick (which looked like brooms but I kept that comment to myself). AND we were all sitting around a campfire roasting marshmallows which were mini marshmallows skewered on a toothpick. They even made a little fire with a leftover beak from an Angry Bird haha! Making s’mores and having laughs around the campfire is one of our family’s favourite pasttimes.

I miss them already!
