The Mickey Mouse Club, that is! :) This was my cake project for the past two days for a high school friend’s birthday. I’m very happy with the way it turned out! It was a vanilla cake layered with strawberry mousse and egg custard. SO good! We feasted on the scraps :)

Upon observing the cake-making process, my brother asked what happened to Mickey’s face… why was it only showing his ears and body?

Me: He was involved in a tragic accident
Him: That took his face and legs!?!!?
Me: It was a sad, sad day… and he’d rather not talk about it!

Fun times! Happy Weekend! ;)

Daring Baker’s Challenge – January

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Hi everyone!
I am part of an online community of individuals who have a larger-than-life passion for baking called: The Daring Kitchen. Every month, a “host” would post a challenge that we all have to complete and post by a certain date. These challenges are not easy, are designed to stretch each one of our skills and are to encourage us to bake something out of our comfort zone.

The January 2011 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Astheroshe of the blog accro. She chose to challenge everyone to make a Biscuit Joconde Imprime to wrap around an Entremets dessert.

A joconde is a type of dense cake that you can design patterns on and make them into beautiful works of art.  You can only imagine all the creative juices running through my head when I decided to do these lovely, simplistic and cute polka dots! :)

I’m looking forward to February’s challenge! I hope it will be something pink or red… or dotted with hearts… or sparkly… or girly! But that’s all I ask ;)

Happy FRIDAY!

Lots ‘o Love

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

We celebrated my mom’s birthday today and I surprised her with a cake filled with little hearts.  My mom loves yellow roses and my dad loves blue roses so I incorporated the two colours into the cake.  Making sugar roses is so addictive!  Seriously, I can’t stop ;)

The many, many monochromatic hearts took many, many hours to put together!  I saw a cake a few years ago with overlapping hearts and mentally stored it away on my “bucket list”.  I finished the cake off by misting it with a thin layer of pearl luster goodness.

Happy Weekend, everyone! :)

I am excited to announce that I have been interviewed by Rebecca from Rebecca Chan Weddings & Events this week!  Rebecca is a creative and high-energy individual who is extremely passionate about event planning.  I am currently working with her on The Sweets Affair and her attention to detail and quest for perfection is like nothing I have seen before.  She is organized, professional and on top of all her work.  I highly recommend her for your next event!

In the meantime, I am going to get back to making these sugar roses. My fastest time tonight? 3:06 minutes. I time myself to make it more fun :) Happy Thursday!

Memories

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

My heart breaks a little when my cakes get cut.  I know, I know… it’s fulfilling its life purpose of making others happy but still!  Here’s a never-before-seen picture from Jeff and Lili’s wedding from September/10.  Photo credit goes to Jonathan Lee for this beautiful 3/4 profile shot.  Love it.  Happy Tuesday ;)

February is going to be busy!

Sunday, January 16th, 2011

I’ve been a busy bee lately having endless business meetings, brainstorming new cake flavours, sketching designs and of course, baking!

I have EXCITING news but I have to wait until next week to share it!  Sweet Escapes will be having cake and cupcake workshops all around the city.  More details to follow!

I have a few wedding cakes booked for this year already and a few confirmed orders.  A few baby shower cakes and even a Dubai Hello Kitty cupcake order!  YES, you read that correctly :)

Have a great week, everyone!
